Food Pantry and Mobile Canteen

Last year, over 17,000 meals and snacks were served to the hungry, including a last week of the month soup kitchen in Cohoes. Albany’s mobile canteen travels out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. into five city neighborhoods, providing food and spiritual nourishment with prayers to children, teens and adults.

Emergency Assistance

Helping those with short term emergency assistance, weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Over the past year, over 17,000 people were given assistance, and over 700 bags of food were distributed. Monthly free food distribution is held from April through October


The Eric Leidzen Music School provides free music lessons to 20 children in piano, guitar, drums and brass instruments. A recital is held annually to showcase their achievements. Over 2,300 boys and girls enjoy after school programs and youth basketball at the Albany Salvation Army. Each summer, The Salvation Army provides an overnight camping experience for 84 children at the Army’s Long Point Camp in the Finger Lakes.  Amsterdam children also enjoy a week of summer camp too. A Vacation Bible School is held in June.

Seasonal Assistance

Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets are provided as well as over 2,500 toys for children to make Christmas brighter for many families.


A Salvation Army caseworker offers social services assistance to Amsterdam residents on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Salvation Army office is located within the Catholic Charities of Fulton and Montgomery Counties building on Kimball Street in Amsterdam. Amsterdam children can spend a week at the Army’s residential camp in the Finger Lakes over the summer. Camp applications can be obtained through The Salvation Army office. Holiday assistance at Christmastime is also available for Amsterdam families.
