The Salvation Army of Herkimer
We are a family of families working to impact our community for God! We share the love of Christ in practical ways that make a difference in the lives we encounter. Captains John and Lori Wood, work along side our congregation, community volunteers, and a small staff to accomplish the work of The Salvation Army in Herkimer, New York to meet human need in Jesus' name. Our services include a food pantry, soup kitchen, fresh produce giveaway, supper club, as well as various worship and church opportunities. We hope to meet you all soon!
Food Pantry
Families and individuals need to be registered for the food pantry and can utilize the pantry once every other month, from the date of registration. To register, you will need photo identification, identification for everyone living in the house and proof of address. There are many families, individuals and seniors who face food insecurity. During the winter months, we serve 60 families a week and in the summer the number increases to 250 families. Our Food Pantry is open Monday - Friday 12:30PM - 2:30PM for residents of Herkimer & Mohawk.
Fresh Produce
Our partnership with supermarkets and local farmers help the Army to offer fresh fruits and vegetables as well as baked goods. This program is available three days a week and participants need to be registered for this program also. Over 90 people a week benefit from this fresh food distribution.
Soup Kitchen
The Army’s Soup Kitchen, open three days a week, offers not only a hot meal, but conversation and friendship. Everyone is welcome to the kitchen which is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6 p.m. During the summer months, over 60 people participate each week and enjoy food and socializing with others and 45 people attend weekly the rest of the year.

Sheila came to us for food when she found herself out of work. She was able to find temporary work that allowed her to sustain herself for awhile but when the work ran out she came back to us for help with food. Often, the people we help just need to get through a short period of time to get back on their feet. She is so grateful when we help her. She is always saying, “When I get a good job, I am going to remember how the Salvation Army has helped me and my family. Maybe then I can return the favor.”
