As you are grocery shopping this week at Price Chopper for your Labor Day weekend picnic, purchase a few additional school supplies for The Salvation Army’s Tools for Schools partnership with Price Chopper.

School starts next week. School supplies and new clothes are expensive for many families who are struggling to pay bills and purchase groceries. The costs of school supplies add up when there are several children in school. Today, in addition to notebooks, pens and pencils, many students are also asked to provide boxes of tissues and crackers to share with fellow students.

Each Price Chopper store has a display bin where you can drop off your in-store purchased school supplies. For the last seven years, The Salvation Army has teamed up with Price Chopper to encourage school supply donations with a program called “Tools for Schools.”

In our Empire State Division, 77 Price Chopper stores give the donated supplies to Salvation Army Worship and Community Centers and Salvation Army Service Units. Price Chopper has this unique partnership in all stores in six states along with New York State. Your donations stay in your community, giving local kids life changing educational opportunities.

The program runs until September 12th.

The Salvation Army is also very appreciative of the many businesses, non-profits and service clubs that hold school supply donation events to collect backpacks, pens, pencils and notebooks.  Many service clubs help to purchase the more expensive high school supplies such as scientific calculators.

According to the National Retail Foundation’s Back-to-School Spending Survey, the average family with children in grades K-12 plans to spend $630.36 on electronics, apparel and other school needs, down only slightly from $669.28 last year. Additionally, family spending on back to school items has increased 42 percent over the last ten years.

The Salvation Army is grateful to our continuing partnership with Price Chopper and their customers in eastern and northern New York and the Southern Tier. They help us ensure

Every child is equipped with the supplies needed to do well academically.

Let’s make every child in our Empire State Division excited and prepared for a new school year.
