This coming Friday, June 5, is National Doughnut Day and Albany, Buffalo and Rochester Salvation Army officers, staff and volunteers are partnering with donut shops to make the day sweet and full of sprinkles!
Albany
In Albany, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., Majors Roger and Carol Duperree will be handing out Entenmann’s doughnuts in Albany to downtown employees at the corner of Pearl and State Streets. Entenmann’s is providing individually wrapped donuts us to distribute.
Rochester
The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester will be celebrating the 78th annual national day with Majors Douglas and Judy Hart on hand from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Donuts Delite, 1700 Culver Road at Empire. They will greet customers and hand out donuts. Along with Donuts Delite’s usual fare, patrons will be able to enjoy Salvation Army donuts and free samples of cinnamon ravioli donuts until 9 a.m.
Rochester staff members and volunteers will be busy that day delivering dozens of donuts to individuals and organizations who have partnered with the Army in the past.
Buffalo
The Salvation Army of Buffalo celebrates the day with seven days of donut related activities. Last Saturday, May 30, the Army handed out donuts to veterans at the Buffalo VA Medical Center during their Memorial Day celebration.
On Friday, Salvation Army staff and volunteers will dress as Donut Lassies from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in Larkinville as the 700 tenants and employees arrive for work. Two Salvation Army trucks, tents, balloons and festivities start the day off for this festive occasion. Entenmann’s will also be providing individually wrapped donuts for this event.
Also in Buffalo, Salvation Army staff and volunteers will deliver dozens of donuts to media and corporate partners donated by Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ Donuts. Salvation Army kettles and bell ringers will be at the three locations of Paula’s Donuts for three hours in the morning.
The third phase of Buffalo’s celebration is the delivery of donuts and coffee to three senior living communities, with Salvation Army band music along with a donut/coffee hour for residents. Beechwood Continuing Care, Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Asbury Pointe Retirement Community and the Army’s Golden Age Center on Main Street will all be the happy recipients of donuts.
National Donut Day
The holiday, held annually on the first Friday of June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago to honor the “Donut Lassies”, who served these treats to soldiers during World War I, and to help raise needed funds for the Army’s social services programs during the Great Depression. The donuts became synonymous with The Salvation Army, as well as the American soldiers who were returning home with the nickname, “doughboys.”
Entenmann's Bakery
Entenmann’s Bakery, a division of Bimbo Bakeries USA, has partnered with The Salvation Army for National Donut Day for the past five years. To recognize the holiday, Entenmann’s will be featuring a new Rich Frosted Patriotic Donut Eight Pack, and a “National Donut Day Free Donuts for a Year” Facebook sweepstakes. The donuts combine the classic fan favorite Rich Frosted Donut with star-studded, red, white and blue sprinkles.
Entenmann’s will also donate to The Salvation Army $1.00 for every sweepstakes entry until July 3rd, up to $30,000.
“As The Army celebrates its 150th global anniversary, we are grateful for loyal partners, like Entenmann’s, who have proven to be exceptional in their efforts to support our mission of goodwill. We look forward to making the 2015 National Donut Day an unforgettable occasion,” said Colonel Ron Busroe, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army.
