Construction of a new Salvation Army Family Store on Troy-Schenectady Road (NYS Route 2) in Latham, NY is starting to take shape, notes Captain Don Sanderson, administrator of the Albany Adult Rehabilitation Center, which is funded in full by the nine Salvation Army Family Stores in the Capital Region.

The new store will be 24,000 square feet, much larger than the current Family Store location down the road, which is only about 8,000 square feet and has a smaller parking lot.  The new store will also have a covered drive-thru donation area to make donations convenient in any weather, said Captain Sanderson.

In addition to a larger, brighter store, the building will also be an “environmentally green” site with a state of the art underground storm water retention plan. Captain Sanderson explains that the underground storm water retention system replaces the old concept of outdoor storm water retention ponds. At a location near the highway, the underground system is 200 feet long and 45 feet wide with ten 24” pipes. It will reduce storm water run-off into the sewer system. Another “green” attribute is the innovative porous paving materials, which will allow storm water to drain through the pavement into the underground water retention area.

“We encourage residents to continue to donate gently used clothing, household items, and furniture to The Salvation Army. Summer is a good time to clean out closets as next month, area college students will be visiting our Family Stores looking for used household goods and furniture as they move into new apartments and, of course, younger children will be replacing clothes that no longer fit with new back-to-school outfits” he said.

“Your donations can save a life. Your donation stays local and is sent to one of our stores for re-sale. Not only are you re-cycling in our community, but your donation is also helping to transform lives. Funds from the sale of goods in our stores support our Adult Rehabilitation Center in Albany on Clinton Street which provides a residential rehabilitation program for men and women who have lost everything to alcohol, drugs and other life issues,” he explained.

For over 100 years The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers have provided spiritual, social, and emotional assistance for men and women who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. Each center offers residential housing, work, and group and individual counseling, all in a clean, wholesome environment.

The physical and spiritual care that program participants receive prepares them to re-enter society and return to gainful employment. Many of those who have been rehabilitated are reunited with their families and resume a normal life.
