According to the National Retail Foundation’s Back-to-School Spending Survey, the average family with children in grades K-12 plans to spend $630.36 on electronics, apparel and other school needs, down only slightly from $669.28 last year. Additionally, family spending on back to school items has increased 42 percent over the last ten years.

For far too many children, back-to-school shopping is another embarrassing reminder that their family’s resources are too limited to afford adequate tools for a successful school year.  For the last seven years, The Salvation Army has been powerfully aligned with Price Chopper to encourage school supply donations with a program called “Tools for Schools,” to eliminate the hopelessness these children feel and let them focus what matters most, success.

Friends and supporters like you that live in central, eastern and northern New York, have an opportunity to be on the front lines of helping us fight this battle. While you’re shopping at your local Price Chopper, purchase school supplies in store and leave them in the bin at the store. Each Price Chopper store will have an in-store display to remind shoppers. The school supplies collected will be collected and distributed by local Salvation Army centers and representatives to families in need.

The program has already begun and runs until September 12th.

We are thankful for our many friends who spend a little more at Price Chopper stores during this time period to ensure children have the right tools for school. It’s amazing to know that little things, like new folders, notebooks and pens, can enhance the learning process.
