David is a 62 year old Vietnam Veteran who trusts in the safety net of The Salvation Army that provides food and personal care items to him once, maybe twice a year. David is currently on medical disability, but sometimes he cannot stretch the money to meet his basic needs of food, a shaving razor, toothbrush and coffee. David said, “You have the greatest people working here. They help me out tremendously and work hard all the time to help as many people as they can. They don’t make you feel bad, and I don’t abuse it, I use it just to get by.”
And David knows a little something about hard work. Shortly after returning from Vietnam, David became addicted to drugs and woke up one morning in a filthy house, with many other hopeless drug addicts. He decided to get out and not look back. David began shoveling driveways and sidewalks in a Buffalo neighborhood. He got his own room at a good boarding house. Between the library and buying books from VALU Home Centers, he began to teach himself how to do carpentry, plumbing, painting and simple household jobs. David had started his own business that allowed him to provide for himself and his family. He had also taken a position as a plumbing department manager of a big box store. Now that he is disabled, he truly appreciates that The Salvation Army is there for him.
David’s greatest joy is his 5 year old grandson. David said, “I am his Superman.”
