Faces of The Army | Mrs. Jan Newport

After the Troy Salvation Army’s anniversary celebration recognizing the 150th global anniversary of the Army and Troy’s 130th anniversary, one of the award recipients, Mrs. Jan Newport sent this letter to Envoy James and Vangerl Pegues.  Mrs. Newport accepted a glass bell on behalf of the Newport-Balcom Family who annually ring bells and staff the Red Kettle at the Walmart location in East Greenbush.  They select the first Saturday in December in remembrance of their son/grandson who was killed by a drunk driver.

She writes:  “I can not begin to thank you enough for the honor you paid Christopher’s families! He would be so happy and proud! I have sent a note to all the “key players” in our “Bell ringing” activity to let them know the award was intended for all – not just me!

The bell has a place of prominence in our living room and it is such an appropriate gift for the services we’ve donated.  Believe me, it’s a win-win situation when we man the kettles – money for a most deserving organization and a way to publicly remember a beloved boy who died much too young.

Instead of elaborating on the wonderful evening you put together, I’m enclosing a letter I wrote to The Record (Troy’s daily newspaper).  I could have praised the entire event even more, but space is limited….

Sincerely,

Jan Newport
