Mary is a 40-year-old woman who moved from North Carolina to Rochester in February. She moved to Rochester with the goal of staying with a friend until she could find employment. Things did not work out and after a couple of days, and she was told to leave. Mary didn’t know anyone else in Rochester and was left homeless and alone.
She found her way to Monroe County Dept. of Human Services Emergency Housing and was placed at The Salvation Army’s Hope House, a shelter for women and their children. She complied with all Department of Human Services’ requirements and those set at Hope House. Mary was a phenomenal client and blessing to us. During her entire duration she completed extra chores and was always available to assist with additional projects.
Mary’s program manager referred her to the Monroe County Anti-Poverty Initiative to help in a community wide research project. She continued her commitment to the research while maintaining her other commitments.
While at Hope House, she was connected with mental health services and began outpatient treatment. She was also referred to Volunteers of America’s Project ReDirect and Working Wardrobe for employment assistance.
By the end of March, Mary secured permanent housing and moved into her apartment. A referral was given to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Family Services for food and clothing/household items. Another positive outcome for Mary is that she currently volunteers for the Salvation Army Hope House, helping others to re-focus their future.
